Compassion fatigue--or secondary traumatic stress disorder--is the natural consequence of stress resulting from caring for and helping traumatized or suffering people or animals (Figley, 1993). This condition occurs when professionals who are exposed to trauma experienced by those in their care become so overwhelmed that they themselves experience feelings of fear, pain, and suffering.

Lecture Objectives:

  • Define symptoms of stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue.
  • Learn how compassion fatigue affects both individuals and their organizations.
  • Examine how to cope with compassion fatigue and how to successfully administer a personal improvement and protection plan.

Robert G. Roop, Ph.D., SPHR, Certified Compassion Fatigue Specialist, has a long history of helping people. A trained psychologist and former probation officer, he received his certification as Compassion Fatigue Specialist from the International Traumatology Institute of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He has conducted over 40 presentations on compassion fatigue regionally and nationally.
