Due to a generous private and restricted grant, sholarship monies apply to this lecture. The full registration fee of $110 is now only $10 with this funding. Scholarships apply exclusively to this lecture, Domestic Violence and Animal Abuse (April 9, 2010).

The focus of this lecture is on the different aspects of the collaboration building process and the development of a multidisciplinary approach to address animal abuse and family violence, including intimate partner violence, child abuse, and elder abuse. The goal of this workshop is to facilitate the local experts in developing a cross-reporting system/model that will be the most successful in their community.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Understand the human-animal bond
  • Explore similarities and connections between various forms of family violence and animal abuse
  • Explore an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving
  • Develop a workable action plan for their community to address family violence and animal abuse, including cross-reporting opportunities.

Marie B. White, MSW, LCSW, earned her Master of Social Work degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and her Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Spanish from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In addition to doing independent consultant work, Ms. White is employed by the Mecklenburg County Community Support Services, Women's Commission Division and has worked for ten years with survivors, child witnesses, and teen victims of Domestic/Dating Violence as well as batterers. Ms. White serves on several committees and boards in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Additionally, Ms. White serves as an adjunct faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Ms. White's background also includes experience in the fields of aging, developmental disabilities, substance abuse, and mental health.

Thomas Adair is the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Animal Care and Control Division Enforcement Supervisor. He is responsible for six Enforcement Supervisors as well as 39 Officers. He also has the task of being the Divison's Training Coordinator and manages the training development of 78 people. He has been an instructor for over 10 years and is the President of Animal Services Training and Consultation Inc. (ASTAC Inc.) He currently lives with his wife, daughter, 3 dogs, and a cat.
