Course Description
Pets for Life: Behavior Assessment will help you develop and then implement a set of criteria by which animals in your agency's care are determined to be appropriate or inappropriate for placement. You will also learn to understand the organizational and practical factors that must be considered when developing and implementing behavior assessments of pets in the shelter.
This 6-week course is part of the Pets for Life Certificate Program.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will have acquired knowledge and skills in the following areas:

The purpose and objective of behavior evaluations of shelter pets

Current and historical perspectives on behavior evaluations in the shelter, including the limitations and controversies surrounding the practice

Existing behavior evaluation tools and related research

An understanding of how to design a behavior evaluation program at your shelter, including:

What test elements to include
-
Where to perform the test
-
When to perform the test
-
Which staff to perform the test
-
Which dogs to evaluate (and which to exclude from the evaluation)

Objective criteria to assess behaviors exhibited during the test in order to accurately and effectively apply your organization’s adoption criteria

Training staff in behavior evaluation, as well as training non-testing staff in the validity of such evaluations

Administrative and legal issues involved in implementing a behavior evaluation program
Class Format: Online
There are no scheduled lecture times; instead, you log on at your convenience to participate in weekly discussions and submit assignments. Expect to spend at least 2-4 hours per week reading materials, completing assignments, and discussing issues.
